The power of the open source community
PostgreSQL has long been the foundation of enterprise database solutions, and as PGConf India 2025 approaches, EDB is proud to continue its tradition of championing open-source database innovation. As a Diamond Sponsor, we are not only supporting the event but also actively contributing thought leadership through insightful talks and hands-on training.
We had the opportunity to sit down with two of our expert attendees, Senior SDE Danish Khan and Senior Principal Engineer Pavan Deolasee, to discuss their participation in this year’s event and the broader impact of the Postgres community in India.
The Evolution of PGConf India
Pavan Deolasee has played an integral role in PGConf India’s growth over the past decade, witnessing its transformation from small, local meetups to one of the largest Postgres gatherings in the region. Reflecting on the journey, he shared, “What I see is a lot of interest from users, thanks to EDB’s presence, and more companies are getting involved every year. The developer community is growing rapidly, and the momentum behind open source has never been stronger.”
This year’s conference is set to be the largest yet, with more than 400 expected attendees, 35 selected talks, and eight specialized training sessions. The addition of a fourth conference track—a sponsor track—demonstrates the increasing investment from industry leaders and the expanding influence of Postgres across various sectors. Be sure to catch Pavan’s talk, Beginner's guide to PostgreSQL Hacking, which is sure to be informative and inspiring for newcomers to the world of Postgres.
Bridging the Kubernetes and Postgres Communities
Danish Khan, making his PGConf India debut, brings a fresh perspective from the Kubernetes ecosystem. His training session, Introduction to PostgreSQL in Kubernetes with CloudNativePG, will explore the intersection of container orchestration and database management. For him, this event represents an exciting opportunity to merge two thriving open-source communities.
“This conference gives me that fusion of the Postgres and Kubernetes communities. Seeing how we have built something for Kubernetes with Postgres is very interesting for me,” Danish explained. His workshop will leverage the CNPG Playground to provide attendees with hands-on experience in deploying and managing Postgres on Kubernetes, ensuring they walk away with practical insights into this evolving space.
Postgres conferences are a valuable opportunity to bring together database experts, developers, and enterprises to discuss the future of open-source database technology. Keep reading for a summary of what EDB will be sharing at PGConf India 2025
Training: Introduction to PostgreSQL in Kubernetes with CloudNativePG
Speaker: Danish Khan, Senior SDE, EDB
March 5, 14:00
PostgreSQL on Kubernetes is a hot topic, and Danish Khan will lead an intensive half-day training session on how to effectively run PostgreSQL workloads using CloudNativePG, EDB’s Kubernetes operator. This training will cover fundamental operations, including spinning up clusters, monitoring, backups, point-in-time recovery, scaling, switchovers, and automated failovers. With CloudNativePG recently earning CNCF certification, this session will provide valuable insights for those looking to modernize their database deployments with cloud-native technologies.
Diamond Sponsor Talk: Navigating Challenging Customer Escalations in PostgreSQL: Strategies for Resolution and Prevention
Speakers: Rushabh Lathia (Senior Principal Engineer & Director, Product Development) and Dilip Kumar (Senior Principal Engineer & PostgreSQL Contributor, EDB)
March 6, 10:45
Handling customer escalations in PostgreSQL environments is critical for ensuring database performance and stability. Rushabh Lathia and Dilip Kumar will dive into real-world PostgreSQL challenges, including subtransaction cache overflow, slow vacuum and wraparound risks, data corruption, and replication conflicts. Attendees will learn structured troubleshooting methodologies and best practices for proactive monitoring and debugging to prevent major service disruptions before they impact production systems.
This session is a must-attend for database administrators, developers, and PostgreSQL enthusiasts looking to deepen their expertise in managing high-stakes PostgreSQL deployments.

TALK: Optimising Column Order for Better Performance and Maintainability
Speaker: Amul Sul, Principal Engineer, EDB
March 7, 12:25
While PostgreSQL is known for its robust performance and flexibility, subtle optimizations can still make a difference in certain scenarios. Join Amul Sul’s talk to discover how the order of columns in a table can influence both performance and maintainability.
In this informative and insightful session, attendees will learn how column order can have direct impact on memory alignment, padding, and overall efficiency. By strategically organizing columns, developers and database administrators can achieve:
- Improved Storage Efficiency: Placing fixed-length columns (e.g., INT, DATE) before variable-length columns (e.g., TEXT, BYTEA) can reduce unnecessary padding and fragmentation.
- Faster Sequential Scans: Optimizing alignment allows the database engine to read data more efficiently, reducing I/O overhead.
- Better Index Utilization: Certain indexing strategies may perform better with structured column placement.
- Optimized Data Export Compatibility: Consistent column order can improve interoperability with external tools and systems.
This session will also address the limitations of column ordering as an optimization technique. While beneficial in some cases, modern database architectures and query planners have evolved to mitigate some of the performance impacts. Factors such as table updates, schema evolution, and readability must also be considered.
